a new feature on habotai where i photograph and briefly interrogate creatives and generally inspiring people.
who better to kick start this off than my handsome husband, brian kanagaki.
what do you do and where do you do it?
I live a little bit of a double life. I spend months at a time on tour with my band Loma Prieta and then ill come home for a month and work on my design career, then take off again for a few months. Last year (between various bands) I was on tour for a about 6 or 7 months and traveled for another 3. Its pretty hard to call any place home. San Francisco is where I say I am from even though I am hardly ever there, my time off tour is spent with my wife in whichever country she is living in at that time, UK or Australia. I haven't had an apartment for the last 2 years but San Francisco will be a more permanent base towards the end of this year. Luckily I can take my laptop/camera with me everywhere I go so I can always work on design projects and keep my life together.
what does your typical day look like?
My life is split between being on tour or at home doing freelance work. There isn't really any such thing as a normal tour day. Everyday is a different city, different drive, different climate. I guess the day goes something like this: wake up, go get breakfast/coffee, drive 5-10 hours, unload and play for 30 minutes, eat dinner around 2am and then go to bed. When I am 'home', wherever that may be, I wake up and try and get a coffee as soon as possible and then come back and check emails and then push stuff around on my computer for a few hours until I'm tired and then take the rest of the day off. Most of my ideas come to me in the second half of the day when I am just out and about not thinking about anything.
where do you draw your inspiration from?
I get a lot of my motivation to work and produce new music/art when I am on tour. Being on the road and stuck in the van for hours at a time really lets my mind just wonder and I work out a lot of ideas. The long stagnant hours make me crazy so when I am home I work harder to make up for the time wasted just sitting there doing nothing. I am really lucky that I get to travel so much as well. Seeing new cities and countries so often is a huge inspiration to me. I get to meet new people and see so much everyday. Its hard not to be inspired. I love just wondering around new places checking out the local spots.
where can i find you?
